(Tamuning, Guam) Thursday, May 16, 2024 - GTA is excited to announce a partnership with the Guam Green Growth Circular Economy Makerspace and Innovation Hub to host a free two-day summer workshop on Thursday, June 6, and Friday, June 7, focused on coding and robotics. This initiative underscores the local telecom's commitment to empowering youth through STEM education and aligns with Guam Green Growth's mission to develop tangible solutions to sustainability challenges and contribute to a green economy for the island region.
The workshop is designed for children aged 12 to 16 at the beginner or entry level who are interested in coding. In addition, students will be introduced to 3D printing, sustainability, and the circular economy. Through hands-on activities and interactive lessons, attendees will gain foundational knowledge and skills in these areas, fostering their interest and understanding of technology and environmental responsibility.
"We are thrilled to collaborate with Guam Green Growth in this important initiative," said Michele Catahay Perez, Sr. Community Relations Manager at GTA. "By investing in our youth and providing them with opportunities to learn about coding, robotics, and sustainability, we are helping to shape the future of our community and the planet."
Austin Shelton, Director of the University of Guam Center for Island Sustainability and Sea Grant and co-chairperson of the Guam Green Growth Steering Committee, says, "This partnership represents a unique opportunity to merge technological education with environmental stewardship." He added, "By introducing young minds to the principles of sustainability and the circular economy through practical, hands-on learning, we can inspire a new generation to innovate responsibly."
This workshop is part of GTA's broader initiative to support community education. The company regularly hosts workshops for the elderly, focusing on digital literacy and helping them navigate modern technology. Additionally, GTA has successfully hosted a Girls Code workshop, encouraging young girls to pursue interests and careers in technology and coding. The Guam Green Growth Makerspace and Innovation Hub also hosts a variety of workshops at the Chamoru Village, offering unique classes that promote and create sustainable, local, and handmade products.
Participants are required to attend both days of the workshop to ensure they receive a comprehensive educational experience. Space is limited to 12 students. A full schedule will be provided upon official acceptance.
