GTA Unveils New Village Mural in Hagåtña Celebrating Tradition and Culture

(Tamuning, Guam) Thursday, August 28, 2025- GTA has unveiled a new mural in the capital as part of its Village Mural Project, which brings color and life to public spaces across the island. Designed by local artist April Colitoy, the artwork honors the practice of talåya’ fishing, a tradition closely connected to Hagåtña’s shoreline. The mural can be found next to the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica.

“This mural is about more than fishing—it’s about passing down wisdom,” said April Colitoy. “I wanted to show a child learning talåya’ for the first time, listening closely to their teacher. It reflects how respect for our heritage will keep these traditions alive for generations.”

Mayor Michael Gumataotao says,“Hagåtña is a coastal village with a rich history of fishing, and this mural is a powerful reminder of that heritage. It reflects the strength of our community and the traditions we continue to honor. I would like to thank April and GTA for bringing this beautiful artwork to the heart of our capital. We start with Hagåtña.”

Sharon Davis, GTA Senior Vice President of Community Engagement and External Affairs, added, “The Village Mural Project is about more than art—it’s about community and supporting the local artists who bring these stories to life. Each mural tells a story that belongs to the people who live there. Partnering with April and Mayor Gumatatao allowed us to celebrate Hagåtña’s unique identity while creating something that residents and visitors alike can take pride in.”

The Hagåtña mural is the eighth installation in GTA’s Village Mural Project, created in collaboration with village mayors and local artists to reflect the unique character of their communities. Additional murals are planned in the months ahead as part of GTA’s mission to connect culture, community, and creativity across the island.
