Tamuning, Guam, Wednesday, September 14, 2022 - GTA and the Mangilao Mayor’s Office are pleased to announce the unveiling of the Faith, Love, and Community mural in the village of Mangilao. Local artist Joshua Agerstrand created the mural art featuring a matriarch and beloved Techa, Mrs. Maria Cruz Quitugua, who guides her family and village community in faith and perseverance.
Mangilao Mayor Allan Ungacta says there are many words to describe Mrs. Quitutua. He adds, “She’s a wonderful, sincere, compassionate, and thoughtful lady. She’s always involved one way or another and always asks about how families are doing. When I look at her, she reminds me of my grandmother. She’s that part of the community that represents The Respetu- respect for our elderly.”
Mangilao Vice Mayor Kevin Delgado says, “Throughout history in Mangilao, people have contributed their time, talent, and abilities. Every person has a gift to share. Every person has a story to tell with their gift. Mrs. Maria Cruz Quitugua tells her story in the form of rosary beads. She tells that story in faith. Her gift to us in the community is the gift of faith. And when she shares that faith, it’s a gift that continues to go on for generations to come.”
Meanwhile, Agerstrand says Mrs. Quitugua’s passion for building a better community inspired him. He adds, “Mrs. Quitugua is a great representation of Mangilao because of her energy and concepts of values of community building. In this mural, I wanted to bring aspects of the village (like the flowers that grow there and aspects of life) to Mangilao. Mrs. Quitugua's spirit embodies community building and sharing what she loves with the people around her.”
Nate Denight, Vice President of Marketing at GTA, says, “This mural is special to us at GTA because we have a connection with Mrs. Quitugua. Not only is her grandson a part of our GTA familia, but her husband retired from GTA many years ago. Our connections with the people around us are what make this island unique. When communities come together, we thrive.”
GTA launched its Village Mural Project in June 2022 to beautify the island and make spaces in our villages more meaningful because it all starts in our villages, where communities connect. The local telecom company is working with the Mongmong Toto Maite community to create its next mural.
